Sundsörn Camping

Activities at Sundsörn

Just 50 metres from the campsite is the fantastic swimming bay with a sandy beach. The water is shallow, making it ideal for families with children and for anyone who likes to take their time before getting in. Large green lawns surround the beach and are the perfect place to sunbathe.

There is also a football pitch, a zip line, and a playground for younger children on site. In the forest you can run, hike, pick mushrooms, and go skiing depending on the weather and season.

Torsö & Brommö

Take your bike to Torsö, which is just after the Torsö Bridge, right next to Sundsörn Camping. At reception you’ll find a detailed map of excellent cycling routes, ranging from a few kilometres up to 80 km with detours. You’ll cycle on both asphalt and gravel roads with little traffic (except for the main road to Laxhall). There are lovely, swim-friendly beaches here.

Brommö is on the other side of Torsö, and we recommend taking the ferry over with your bike, or renting one on the island. Hiking is also great here. Brommö is a car-free island with easy gravel roads and trails. You can take local buses to the ferry terminal. The full loop is 20 km long, and there are many beautiful sandy beaches to stop at, such as Store Vite Sand, Rövaren, or Rukehamn.

Discover Mariestad

Mariestad is often called the Pearl of Lake Vänern and was founded in 1583 by Duke Charles, son of Gustav Vasa, who named the town after his wife Maria. If you’re curious about the town’s older history, you can join historical walking tours in the Old Town (see times at the tourist office).

From Sundsörns Camping, it’s only 13.7 km away, making it a great day trip for the whole family. In Mariestad you can stroll around among the boathouses by the harbor, shop for crafts in picturesque shops, go to a concert, and visit restaurants and cafés.
On rainy days, you can visit the swimming pool, art exhibitions, or go bowling.

Day trips

A popular and different mini-golf course for adults and children can be found at Café Bäcken, where well-known Mariestad settings and buildings make up the course. If you want a more action-packed day trip, we recommend Skara Sommarland, Scandinavia’s largest water park with play areas and rides. For more nature experiences, our “mountain” Kinnekulle is a must. Here you’ll find Falkängarna, beautiful hiking trails, lookout towers, small cosy shops, cafés, and a ski slope in winter.
If you’d like to enjoy a good meal, we recommend  Restaurant Brygghuset, right next to Sundsörn Camping, or New Restaurant Laxhall, located right by Lake Vänern with views of Brommö.

Experience boat lockage

The Göta Canal is a 190.5 km-long waterway that runs through Götaland. It was built between 1810 and 1832 to connect the seas in the east and west. In the latter part of the 1800s it was an important transport route, but when rail traffic took off, the Göta Canal lost its former glory. Instead, the canal became one of Sweden’s most visited tourist attractions.

Visit Sjötorp, one of the locks along the Göta Canal. Watch the boats pass through the lock, visit the small boathouses nearby, and enjoy a tasty ice cream. Norrqvarn is another lock with its own mini canal for children, where they can steer & lock boats themselves. Enjoy a good lunch or coffee in the restaurant.
